Turkey Apple Melt – A classic turkey melt is taken up a notch with the addition of granny smith apples and a homemade Dijon honey mustard.

Sandwiches get a bad rap. They’re pushed to the side and treaty like a “lazy” option. But the truth is, sometimes I just want a comforting, classic meal that I can eat between two pieces of bread. Is that so wrong?!

I’ll admit, however, that my typical turkey sandwich can get a little boring. So I decided to snazz it up a little by adding a homemade Dijon honey mustard and tart apple and grilling it until the cheese gets nice and gooey.

And so my Turkey Apple Melt was born! Check it out!

What’s in this melt?

This melt has a few basic components: crusty bread, honey mustard, thinly sliced turkey, muenster cheese, and sliced apple. But the best part of the sandwich is how all these components work together to bring killer flavor. The mild turkey pairs so beautifully with the tart apple and gooey muenster cheese that you’ll be taking bite after bite until you realize the sandwich is all gone!

How to make this melt

Think of a melt similar to a grilled cheese but with other ingredients, usually a protein of some sort. Therefore, the cooking process is done pretty similarly. But before we cook it, we have to assemble the sandwich.

First, you’ll layer on the homemade Dijon honey mustard. It’s made by simply mixing together equal parts Dijon mustard, honey, and mayonnaise.

Bread with dijon honey mustard spread over it

Then comes the cheese. Depending on the type of bread used, the cheese may not fit perfectly. But I don’t accept cheese oozing off the side because then it will burn off once we grill it in the saute pan. Instead, I rip of the pieces that are hanging over and fill in the gaps.

Bread with turkey slices over the layer of dijon honey mustard

Next comes the slices of apple. I like putting the apple on the cheese so that the melted cheese acts as a glue to keep those apples in place. Then, the sandwich it gets finished with the thinly sliced turkey right on top.

Layer of granny smith apples on the turkey and dijon honey mustard

Now that we have the sandwich assembled, it’s time for grilling. To get the crust nice and crispy, I add 1/2 tablespoon of butter to a saute pan and let it melt while the pan heats up. Once the butter is melted, it’s time to grill the sandwich. Pro tip: do not use heat higher than medium or else the bread will brown before the cheese melts.

Once you’ve browned one side, flip and brown the other side. Once the cheese has melted, remove the sandwich and serve immediately.

Tips & Tricks

  1. For the bread, I used sourdough, which gave the sandwich an extra boost of flavor. But you can use whichever crusty bread you prefer.
  2. I chose to use thinly sliced turkey because it’s easy to bite into without taking all the turkey with you and leaving two empty slices of bread.

Now this is a sandwich I’d be excited about! As a high school teacher, I am always on the go, scarfing down a sandwich whenever I get the chance during the busy school day. If I bring this to work…. this changes my attitude on snacking on sandwiches! Something to look forward to at lunchtime! YUM!

I love a little sweet in my sandwich – cranberry sauce is a favourite of mine – but have never tried raw slices of apple! I bet it goes perfectly with the turkey, crust bread and that tasty looking homemade honey dijon! I know what I’m making for lunch!

I love sandwiches and I think they make a great breakfast lunch or dinner. Some great tasting ingredients between two slices of bread is always a win-win for me. Looking at your list of ingredients, it would be helpful to put the turkey in it. I did see that you have it in the directions. The apples really give the sandwich a great touch.

Toasted bread sandwiches always come out best. I wonder if this recipe would work on a panini press too…? Surely it would, don’t you think?
