Jelly Roll French Toast – Pieces of white bread rolled with raspberry jam, dipped in an egg custard, grilled, and finally rolled in sugar.

French toast jelly rolls stacked on a white plate with sliced bread and a jar of jam in the background

One of best part of cooking for kids is making the food in fun shapes. These Jelly Roll French Toast sticks do just that! And don’t think that these are just for kids – the flavor and texture is so yummy that adults enjoy it just as much.

These rolls are made by flattening out white bread, spreading jam on the bread, and then rolling them back up. Each roll is dipped into an egg custard and then griddled on the stove top until cooked through. Finally, then rolled in sugar for a sweet finish.

Here is my Jelly Roll French Toast!

Tips & Tricks

  1. White bread works best. The softness of white bread makes it easier to flatten and roll up.
  2. Don’t overfill the rolls. You will have a hard time keeping the bread rolled up if there is too much jam. They could end up unraveling while they cook!
  3. Flatten out the bread well. To make the bread easy to roll up, make sure the bread is flattened as much as possibly (without tearing it, of course).
  4. Add rolls to sugar when hot. The sugar will stick best to the French toast rolls when they are hot.

Jelly Roll French Toast

Prep Time20 minutes mins
Cook Time15 minutes mins
Total Time35 minutes mins
Servings: 20 rolls

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 20 slices white sandwich bread
  • ⅓ cup raspberry jam
  • ⅔ cup heavy cream
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup granulated sugar

Instructions

  • Grab 20 slices of bread and slice off the crust edges. Grab one slice and roll out with a rolling pin until flat. Spread with 2 teaspoons of raspberry jam. Roll up tightly. Repeat with the other 20 slices.
  • In a medium bowl, mix heavy cream, salt, and eggs. Mix together with a fork in a whisking motion to beat the eggs well.
  • Place nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter. While the pan heats up, dip a roll into the batter. Remove roll from custard and let the excess drain off. Then, place seam side down on hot skillet. Cook until the bottoms brown, about 1-2 minutes. Flip and cook 1-2 minutes more. Repeat with the rest of the rolls.
  • Add granulated sugar to a shallow bowl. Add French toast rolls to the sugar and roll to cover in sugar. Serve immediately.

The note about flattening the white bread well before spreading the raspberry jam is really helpful. I often listen through recipes while cooking, and the clear sequence of rolling, dipping in custard, grilling, then coating in sugar makes this one easy to follow hands-free.

These would be such a fun breakfast project, especially with the tip to flatten the bread well and keep the raspberry jam from overfilling so the rolls stay together. I could see making a weekend batch with kids and using a number wheel to pick the next filling idea or who gets the first turn rolling each slice.

The tip about not overfilling the bread with jam is really useful, especially since the rolls need to stay tight while they cook. Rolling them in sugar while they are still hot also sounds like the detail that makes the finish work so well.

The tip about rolling the French toast in sugar while the pieces are still hot is exactly the kind of note I like to keep with a recipe, since it explains why the finish works instead of just listing a step. I use a local Markdown viewer for saving cooking notes, and details like the raspberry jam amount and the quick 1-2 minute griddle timing are much easier to scan when the recipe is formatted cleanly.

I like the practical tip about flattening the white bread well before adding the raspberry jam, and rolling the French toast in sugar while it is still hot makes so much sense. The 1-2 minute griddle timing would be easy to follow from a short cooking video transcript too.

I love how these turn simple white sandwich bread into something that feels like a bakery treat. Flattening the slices, keeping the raspberry jam light, and starting seam-side down all make so much sense. Rolling them in sugar while hot sounds like the perfect crisp, sweet finish.

These look so fun for breakfast, especially with the raspberry jam tucked inside the flattened white bread. I like the tip about starting seam-side down in the butter, and rolling them in sugar while they’re still hot sounds like exactly what makes them feel extra special.

Rolling the pieces in sugar while they’re still hot is such a smart finishing touch. I also appreciate the note about not overfilling with raspberry jam, since that seems like the difference between neat little rolls and a sticky mess.

The purple @Uno Online Free color of the filling looks very similar to blueberry filling. But I think the sweetness is not suitable for me because the amount of pulp is quite a lot and I’m thinking about whether to adjust the recipe a bit or not. But like that I’m afraid of losing the characteristic flavor.

The inspiration for this snack comes from the Bloomin’ Onion at Outback Steakhouse. Making a whole onion seems so intimidating so I never thought to make it at home. But then the thought came to me – why not fried them in little petals instead? They’re also easier to dip than onion rings.
