Mocha Brownie Pie – Gooey chocolate pie with a hint of espresso and topped with homemade espresso whipped cream

Mocha Brownie Pie, Gooey chocolate pie with a hint of espresso and topped with homemade espresso whipped cream

I hope you’re ready. Ready for the most insane dessert I’ve had in a very long time – homemade or store-bought.

This Mocha Brownie Pie caught me off-guard. I was just making a new pie recipe, thinking it would be a nice addition to my repertoire because I don’t yet have a go-to chocolate recipe. But then I tried it and my life changed forever.

Not only did this recipe become my new favorite pie recipe, it became my new favorite dessert to make. Period. So I just had to share it with you all!

Is it the gooey filling? Or maybe the espresso whipped cream on top? Or is it the rich chocolate flavor with a hit of espresso? It’s all of those (and more!).

How is this pie made?

Now, this isn’t you’re typical brownie pie. Many brownie pies that I’ve had are thick and chewy, just like brownies.

This pie, however, is gooey beyond belief. I would say the filling is similar to a chocolate chess pie or a chocolate pecan pie (without the pecans, of course), but a little thicker. This texture comes from using very little flour in the recipe – only 1/4 cup!

To make this pie extra decadent, I added in some instant espresso into the batter. This really sets off the chocolate flavor. Fun fact – coffee enhances the flavor of chocolate. That’s why you make see brewed coffee added to cake recipes, like these Nutella Crunch Cupcakes.

Because this pie is so gooey, I didn’t want to pair it with ice cream – those two texture just didn’t feel right together. However, I think the rich pie did need something light and creamy to serve alongside it.

The espresso whipped cream was the perfect addition. It’s so simple that you’ll want to make it for all your chocolate desserts! You just whip your cream and add a little espresso to it to set it off.

Tips & Tricks

In case you’re a little nervous about tackling this recipe, here are a few tips to give you the confidence you need to get through it without a hitch:

  1. I have no shame in saying that I used frozen pie crust for this recipe. I hate working with pie crust. It’s just not worth the effort to me. I rather just buy a pretty frozen crust and be done with. Don’t be ashamed to do the same!
  2. Be very careful when microwaving chocolate. You don’t want to microwave for more than 30 seconds at a time, or else you risk burning the chocolate. And there’s no coming back from burnt chocolate.
  3. Unlike most brownie recipes, you don’t need to wait until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted to recognize when this pie is done baking. It should have a very thin layer  of batter on the toothpick when it’s ready.
  4. Make sure you use instant espresso for this recipe. If you use regular espresso, the grounds won’t dissolve and you’ll end up with an undesirable crunch in your pie.

There you have it – you’re new favorite dessert! Thank goodness I don’t always have pie crust on hand or I’d be making this pie every week!

Mocha Brownie Pie

Gooey chocolate pie with a hint of espresso and topped with homemade espresso whipped cream
Prep Time15 minutes mins
Cook Time35 minutes mins
Total Time40 minutes mins
Servings: 8 servings

Ingredients

For the brownie pie:
  • 1 9-inch pie crust baked
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon instant espresso powder
  • 4 tablespoons butter unsalted
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3/4 cup dark brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
For the espresso whipped cream:
  • 1 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 teaspoons instant espresso powder
  • 6 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • grated chocolate for topping

Instructions

For the brownie pie:
  • Make sure you've baked your pie crust according to package/recipe instructions. Set it aside to cool. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
  • In a microwave-safe bowl, add 2/3 cup of chocolate chips and unsalted butter. Microwave in 30-second increments until completely melted, stirring after each increment. Once melted, add instant espresso, vegetable oil, and cocoa powder. Mix until combined.
  • In a separate bowl fitted for your stand mixer, add eggs, brown sugar, vanilla, and salt. Beat them on medium with a paddle attachment until thick and creamy, about 2 minutes. Add chocolate mixture and beat together on low until combined. Add flour and beat just until combined.
  • Using a spatula, scrape the sides of the bowl and mix until everything is incorporated. Add 1/3 cup of remaining chocolate chips and stir. Pour into baked pie shell and smooth the top.
  • Bake in preheat oven for 30-35 minutes, or until toothpick comes out with a very thin layer of batter on it. Remove from oven and place on cooling rack to cool completely.
For the espresso whipped cream:
  • Microwave 2 teaspoons of cream in a small bowl for 10 seconds. Add espresso powder and stir until completely combined. Set aside.
  • Place remaining cream in a bowl fitted for a stand mixer. Beat on medium-high  until soft peaks form. Add sugar 1 tablespoon at a time while mixer is on low. Once stiff peaks form, add espresso mixture and mix on low until combined. Top cooled pie with espresso whipped cream and serve.

Pretty sure none of the mocha whipped cream is even going to make it to my brownie pie because I will eat it by the spoonful straight from the bowl! This recipe is amazing!

It does look gooey. Rich and chocolatey! A decadent dessert worth of a special occasion. The touch of espresso in it is perfect. I believe coffee and chocolate belong together. A marriage in taste heaven. I haven’t had a really good chocolate dessert in a long time. It’s about time I made a mocha brownie pie.

This pie looks so moist and chewy and what’s not to love about mocha and espresso whipped cream? I hear you about the pie crusts too time consuming!

I had this recipe pulled up when the fella was sitting next to me and he immediately looked over and said “I want that. You definitely need to make that.” This pie combines two great flavors in one spectacular treat! All I need is a glass of milk to accompany it!

Omg, me too! Hahah, I am so glad I am not alone! I always feel “ashamed” when I post about making a pie with prepared pie crust, but the reason I don’t make pie that often is strictly because of the dough! I am so so intimidated by making it!
But this looks amazing. I’m totally down for a mocha pie

The Pumpkin Cheesecake Macaron! Pumpkin butter i The Pumpkin Cheesecake Macaron!

Pumpkin butter is just like apple butter – a spreadable puree of deliciousness with tons of spices – but made with pumpkin puree instead of apple (duh). I've seen pumpkin butter sold in stores (near the jams and jellies) but it wasn't available at my store yet.

So I just made my own using a recipe from Skinnytaste. I only made a half-batch and it was more than enough!

Side note: I've been using the leftover pumpkin butter to flavor my coffee in the mornings. Just a teaspoon goes a long way!

Why these are special: These macarons are so delicate, yet chewy and BEYOND flavorful, you guys! Move over, pumpkin spice latte, there's a new favorite pumpkin treat in town!

These are restaurant-quality French cookies you can make at home! Yes, they take some practice and attention to detail, but they're SO worth it! The "wow" factor alone is incredible, and they taste even better than they look!

Perfect for Christmas cookie trays, holiday cookie exchanges, bake sales, homemade gifts, or honestly ANY time you're craving that classic peanut butter and chocolate combo!

These Mint Chocolate Fudge Cookies have so many el These Mint Chocolate Fudge Cookies have so many elements that it was really hard to name them! They're chewy, chocolatey, minty, have a layer of buttercream, and a nice dollop of fudge on top. I decided 4 words were the max I could use when naming them so I settled on mint chocolate fudge cookies!

Mint cookies have long been a love of mine, whether it's a thin mint or mint cookie ice cream. I love the duo of chocolate and mint together, but it is EVEN better when the chocolate is in the form of a cookie!

March tends to be the unofficial month of mint because of St. Patrick's Day and the Shamrock Shake at McDonald's making its annual appearance this time of year. So I had to give you a fun, new mint cookie to celebrate these flavors!

Perfect for St. Patrick's Day parties, cookie exchanges, gifts for mint chocolate lovers, or any time you want to impress with a stunning cookie!

I present to you my Pigs in a Blanket Wreath! The I present to you my Pigs in a Blanket Wreath!

The wreath isn't hard to assemble at all! You just make the little pigs in a blanket like you normally do - using crescent dough and mini hot dogs - but just arrange them in a ring and bake. Simple as that! I added a little poppy seeds to step up the presentation a little. But if you have picky little eaters, you can leave them off!

About that dipping sauce... When serving the wreath, don't forget the dipping sauce! I love honey mustard with my hot dogs so that's what I wanted to serve with this wreath. But not just any honey mustard. No, no. This is a Dr Pepper honey mustard, guys! I make a killer Dr Pepper mustard glaze for my Thanksgiving ham so I know first-hand how well Dr Pepper pairs with the mustard flavors!

Because the tomatoes are roasted, they have a similar flavor you would find in a tomato soup. And we all know how incredible cheese and tomato soup go together!

The combination of creamy, rich mac and cheese with those slightly acidic, charred roasted tomatoes is PERFECTION. It's like eating grilled cheese with tomato soup, but elevated! The tomatoes cut through the richness in the best way possible.

Perfect for cozy nights, family dinners, or potlucks!
